See how very much our heavenly Father loves us, for he allows us to be called his children, and we really are! 1 John 3:1a
One year for Mother’s Day my son gave me a Top Ten list of why he loves me. It includes things like: “she makes me laugh when she tickles me” and “she finds time to play with me”. In a flash of inspiration, I thought it would be cute to write a Top Ten list for him listing all the reasons why I love him. I soon noticed the flaw in this idea. I do not love my son because of anything he does for me; I love him because he is my child.
God’s Love Is Unconditional
God loves us the same way. He doesn’t make a Top Ten list for his children either. We may be tempted to think he does. We may imagine it contains things like: “she attends church every week” or “she gives to the poor”, but the truth is that God loves us because we are His children. We cannot earn his love or cause Him to love us more than He already did when He gave His life for us. He does not love us if or when He simply loves us.
If you are caught in a cycle of trying to please God or you are striving to do things that you believe will earn God’s favor, stop. God’s love is unconditional. His favor is not earned. Counting or tabulating the ways you have earned His favor or love is spiritual pride and will tie you up in knots.
Seek God because you love Him, just as you would want your child to spend time with you – not to earn something from you but because he enjoys being with you. You’ve already made His List!
