Simple Takes You Deeper

Remember when you were a kid and you were so excited when you were allowed into the deeper end of the pool or your parents said you could go deeper into the water at the lake?

Have you ever done something that you were afraid or deeply hesitant to do that once you did it was an exhilarating experience that moved you out of your comfort zone and made you braver, stronger, more fulfilled?

How did it feel when you stopped playing it safe and dove deeper or climbed higher?

When is the day you will stop playing it safe with Jesus?

Jesus calls us out of the boat, onto the water, where we can feel the wind in our hair. He calls us away from the shore into the Deep where the waves can flow over us…these places are scary, they’re not controllable. We like control.

We want to dip our toes into Jesus but to be out in the Deep, far from the shore of safety…that’s a wild place few dare to go.

Deep calls to deep.

When He invited Peter to step out of the boat He was inviting Peter to obedience and trust, yes, but He was also inviting Peter to experience what He was experiencing! “Dude, this is amazing – come join me!”

He was inviting Peter to walk on water! To experience a miracle, unbridled joy, to live for a moment without fear or limitations!

Deep calls to deep

Just a glimpse, it’s all we get until we are united with Him. But we can get glimpses every day, all day.

Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 5: 17 to pray continuously. It’s an attitude, not a religious exercise. It’s an ongoing inner dialogue with your ever-present friend.

He’s never out of office, on another call, or on vacation.

For years I kept Jesus at a distance because I was afraid of the overwhelming intimacy drawing closer would bring. I had experienced it and tasted and I was afraid to go deeper so I used work and busy-ness as an excuse.

But Deep never stops calling, and like a patient lover, Jesus kept wooing.

Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls;
All Your waves and billows have gone over me.
The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime,
And in the night His song shall be with me—
A prayer to the God of my life. ~ Psalm 42:7&8 (NKJV)

Banish the Shoulds and Go Deeper

Jan Johnson says to banish “should” from our vocabulary when talking about our relationship with God. When you think about it “should” cancels grace.

I should do this, I should do that, I should be closer to God, I should trust Him more…

“God is the Great Inviter” – Jan Johnson

It’s His kindness that leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4). He has opened the way for us to have a relationship with us, not because we should but because we want to. He’s interested in you, He invites you to Him.

Deep calls to deep

I’m not in the deep yet – who can imagine the depths of God? But I think my legs are getting wet. I’ve definitely left the shore!

Join me?

Deep is calling you. There’s so much He wants to say to you, to show you, to give to the world through you. But it’s possible you can’t go deeper because you are distracted by too many other things.

One of the key benefits of simplifying your life is that allows you to grow closer to God. Your schedule, your commitments, your To-Dos, your maintenance of the things you own…they all keep you from Him. And they keep you from being able to serve others.

In and endless cycle of grace, He gives us gifts to serve the world. ~ Ann Voskamp

Deep calls to deep.

But you shouldn’t go…no, don’t go because you should, go because you want to…and if you are curious, go and dip your toes…and pray for grace to meet you there. He will. He is Grace.

Deep calls to deep.

Do you hear Him calling?

Are you content to just dip your toes? Can you trust and be all in? If you are not there yet, you may need to rest in Him and find the confidence you need to go deeper.

Taste and see that the Lord is good…but jump in once you know He is!

Jan Johnson intrigued me with this idea of banishing the word “should” from our vocabulary. Check out this podcast where she explains it.

  1. Beautiful Post! I feel like I jumped in when I determined to be obedient above all else, and that is what led me to write and blog! God is so good! And yet we let fear get in the way. Satan is sneaky, and works hard to keep us from going deep with Jesus. It is an amazing feeling though when you just let go and trust completely! Many Thanks for a Great post! 8)

  2. I have a friend who shared that same thought about the word “should” with me a couple of years ago. It surely gave me something to think about, and I often find myself now trying to banish it from my vocabulary. Not so easy! Thank you for sharing. This is a great reminder and kick-in-the-pants all at the same time!
